With LIMO you can discover and get
access to print and online
resources, such as books, articles, journals, digital media and other
types of resources. It is based on Primo of Ex Libris.
You can use Limo to find publications:
- held in the KU Leuven and
other LIBISnet libraries;
- managed in LibriLinks and
LibriSourcePlus (metadata of e-journals and databases)
- included in LIRIAS, the digital
repository for KU Leuven research;
- contained in Primo Central, an
index of hundreds of millions of articles and e-books from primary and
secondary publishers and aggregators, and from open-access repositories.
The Primo Central index, hosted by Ex
Libris in a cloud environment, covers several of the e-journal
collections and scholarly databases licensed by KU Leuven. The content
is constantly growing.
Thanks to the integration of local collections with the Primo Central
Index in LIMO, holdings (books, cd’s and cd-roms, videos, ...) and
e-resources are presented in a single, relevance-ranked list of results.
Updates and changes
February 2012
Limo has been upgraded to a new version, resulting in a number of
changes and new features like:
- It is now possible to add your personal tags
to search results.
- A new facet : Rare Books allows you to limit your search
results to manuscripts and books before 1840 from the Library
Catalogue. You can also search for these documents using the search
filter
Rare Books
in Advanced Search.
- External users now can change their password via My Account.
- Users can now follow up their ILL request via My Account.
- There was a problem with the export of search results to
Reference Manager and EndNote; this has now been fixed.
Getting started in Limo
Working on
campus
or off campus/from home
|
Top |
In order to make maximum use of Limo’s search potential you have to
make sure that you are connected to the KU Leuven network: that way
you will be able 1) to retrieve all available resources in the printed
and digital collections and 2) to link through to any licensed content
that you find.
You can tell that you are connected to the KU Leuven network when
Limo displays the message “You are on campus” in the top right hand
corner of your screen. This will always be the case when:
- you’re working in a library or a PC room (KULeuvenNet);
- when you are on KotNet;
- when you are connected to the university’s wireless network
(CampusNet).
Limo knows when you are off campus (be it at home or abroad) and
consequently cannot use its full potential.
In that case, a window will pop up with the following
message:

Using your Central KU Leuven credentials you can then log in to
KULeuvenNet through the
proxy server:

After that
you will also get the message that you are on campus:

Do I need to sign in ?
|
Top |
Even when you are on campus Limo doesn’t automatically recognize you
personally. By signing in you have access to a personal account which
enables you to do the following:
- Set preferences for your current and future sessions: you
can set
your
preferences so that they reflect the way you usually search, and save
them for
future sessions.
- Permanently store items you have found and queries you
have
submitted in “My Citations”: you can save items from your results list
to your basket and you can save queries that you have performed for
future use.
- Use library services: you can benefit from library
services such
as requesting items or making an interlibrary loan request.
You sign in by clicking the corresponding link displayed in the top
right hand corner of your screen.
This link takes you to a page showing several login options:

Members of KU Leuven, KATHO, KHBO, KHK, KHLim or Lessius can sign in
using their respective institutional credentials.
People from other institutions, as well as walk-in users with no
affiliation at all, can
use the All other users
option to sign in with their library
card credentials or with a User Id and Password given to them upon
registration at the desk. These users can change there password via My
Account > Personal Settings > Edit Details.
See also Personal Settings.
Once you’re signed in your name will appear on the screen for the
duration of the session, indicating that you can make full use of the
customization functionalities mentioned above. People working on their
private computers have no need to sign out, but after working in Limo
on a public PC you are strongly advised to use the Sign out
button, so that your searches remain private and your personal settings
and My Citations
cannot be tampered with by anyone else.

Performing Searches
You can search very easily in LIMO. Just type one or more words you are
looking for and click the Search button.

Note: LIMO
assumes that you are searching for all the words you type unless OR
or NOT are specified between the words and phrases.
One of the key attributes of Limo is that it unifies
search across a multitude of the library's resources: in particular
print and electronic books and journals, but also audiovisual materials
and digital objects. By default any query run in Simple Search is a
cross-collection search which can potentially yield many hundreds or
even thousands of relevant results. When the system returns those
results you should navigate and filter them using the facets shown in a
panel on the left-hand side of the screen. This is a great help in
managing large (at times even overpowering) sets of search results, but
Limo also comes with a set of tools that enable you to increase the
quality of your queries
Try the following to make your searches more precise and get the best
results
for your query:
Searching for a Phrase
To search for a phrase, type quotation marks around the phrase. You can
combine both words and phrases in your search.
Note: If you do
not enclose the phrase with quotation
marks, the system will find items that contain the individual words in
the phrase, regardless of whether these words are located next to each
other in the order specified.
For example, to search for global warming as one term, type the
following in the search box:

You can search for items that contain at least one of the words or
phrases you type in the Search box. To do so, type OR between the words
or phrases.
Note: If you search for words or phrases without
specifying OR or NOT, Limo
assumes that you are searching for all the specified words
or phrases.
For example, to search for items with the word Irish or the word
Celtic, type the following in the search box:

Excluding Words or
Phrases
You can exclude items that contain specific words or phrases. To do so,
type NOT and then type the word or phrase to exclude.
Note:
If you search for words or phrases without specifying
OR or NOT, LIMO assumes that you are searching for all the specified
words or phrases.
To use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
within search phrases, you must enter them in uppercase letters.
Otherwise, Limo will consider them as part of the query.
For example, to search for items with the word Celtic and exclude any
of these items with the word Irish, type the following in the search
box:

You can include the following wildcard characters in your searches:
- ? enter a question mark to perform a single character wildcard
search. For example, type wom?n to search for records that
contain the strings woman, women, and so forth.
- * enter an asterisk to perform a multiple character wildcard
search. For example, type cultur* to search for records that
contain strings, such as culture, cultural, and culturally.
You can use parentheses to group terms within a query. For example, to
search for Shakespeare and either tragedy or sonnet, type the following
in the search box:

How to quickly find..

In Simple Search you run a search across the full
range of available
resource types, journals, books or databases, without limiting the
results list beforehand by author’s name, publication date or language.
It is only after you get any results that you start refining them by
means of the facets located on the left hand side of the screen. In
this way the search experience in Limo is wholly in line with that on
the majority of leading research platforms.
People who prefer to perform searches in the traditional manner
typical of library catalogs such as the one of LIBISnet, are still able
to do so via the Advanced Search option.
Here a number of filters are
available that allow to reduce the number of search results before the
query is actually run. They cover:
- the bibliographic fields searched: you can specify whether the
search terms used should appear in title, author/creator or subject
field only, or in any field;
- the publication date: you can set a given time frame, varying
from “Any year” over “Last year” to “Last 20 years.”
- the material type: you can indicate what type of material
you’re
specifically looking for;
- the language of publications you wish to find: you have the
choice between Dutch, English, French, German and any language;
- the search scope: you can choose to search either all available
data, or just the data of locally available items.
Finally, you can also specify whether the search terms you enter should
occur in the exact same form in your results search only), or in any
related form possible, or at the start of the title.

One of the key attributes of Limo is that it
performs
a unified search
across a multitude of library resources: in particular print
and electronic books and journals, but also audiovisual materials and
digital objects. With Advanced Search you
can limit the number of hits for a query before actually launching the
search, by setting a time frame (limit by Publication Date), selecting
a
resource type (limit by Material Type), choosing the language (limit by
Language) or
reducing the search scope (Local Data vs. All Data). You also have
three
separate search panels at your disposal for the formulation of more
complex
searches.
This traditional, OPAC-style way of searching is abandoned in Simple
Search, where
you can start searching simply by entering one or more search terms
in a single search box. By default the system runs any Simple Search
action
across the full breadth of the local collection and a considerable,
ever-growing part of the digital collection of databases and e-journal
collections.
Consequently searches can yield many hundreds or even thousands of
relevant hits.
Even considering that the results list is relevance
ranked by default, which means that the more relevant hits appear
at the top, such very large numbers can be pretty intimidating and
overpowering to the user. However, each set of results also comes with
a number of facets displayed in a separate panel to the left.
Drawn from the metadata of the search results, they offer a
variety of filters that help to refine the
outcome of any search operation: by zooming in on the hits that
correspond to the chosen criterium or criteria, the total number of
results is
reduced.
Up to ten different types of facets can be shown next to any
results
list.
Limiters
Always at the top are limiters
that allow you to focus on specific sets of results. Depending
on the items you have actually found, up to four can be displayed:
- Physical items: limits
the results list to items
retrieved
from the traditional library catalog, which primarily
contains books and journals (but hardly any journal articles) from the
print collections of
the libraries of the KU Leuven and its partners in the LIBIS-network.
- Peer-reviewed: limits
your results to journal articles
that have been thoroughly checked by fellow scholars and researchers
before publication.
- Full Text Online: : shows
online publications, access
to which is assured by the university library (whereas the full set of
results may also contain online publications which are not accessible
because the KU Leuven does not have a subscription or license). It
goes without saying that you need to be on campus in order to
access those items.
- Cited in WoS: limits the
results to scholarly and scientific
books and articles which according to the
Web of Science citation database have been cited in other journal
articles; this information may be an indication of the
publication’s quality and trustworthiness.
Search filters
In addition to those limiters the following search filters
help you to refine your set of results:
- Resource Type: filter by
type of material (e.g.
Articles,Audio Visual, Books, Dissertations, News Items etc.).
- Creation Date: filter by
year of publication; this filter is gradually refined: initially the
list will look like this:

Choosing Until 1996
, for instance, will result in:
- Creator: filter by author or
editor
Please note: if you have a lot of search
results, probably not all authors/editors will be listed here but only
the 50 most frequently shown authors in this result list.
- Topic: filter by topic
Be warned: the topics shown derive from
separate databases and consequently never cover the full set of
results; this also explains
the occurrence of similar topics which correspond to different items
- Language: filter by
language of the original publication.
- Source: filter by
database
from which Limo has retrieved the results: e.g. LIBISnet Catalogue,
Lirias, OneFile (GALE), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ),
- Journal Title: filter by
title of the journals in which articles retrieved have been published.
- Library (KU Leuven):
filter
by KU Leuven library where the printed copy of a hit is available.
- Library (other institutions):
filter by LIBISnet library where the printed copy of a hit is available.
For each limiter and filter Limo by default shows the three items with
most results. Additional items can be viewed by clicking the Show X
more link.
 |

|
Per facet you can only select one item at a
time, but you can combine several facets one after the other. Your
choices are
visible at the top of the screen, close to the search box. Any facet
can be
removed again by clicking the X

Using the Search Results
For each item in the results list a short bibliographic description is
given. The title is invariably displayed in bold. Additional details
depend on the resource type (indicated by an icon). For books, they are
the author’s or editor’s names, place and year of publication; in the
case of journal articles, publication details of the issue in question
are given.
Immediately underneath those bibliographic details users can see
information about availability of each item. This information is not
clickable, but its colour indicates whether the item is Available
(green) or Not (red). Limo always performs a
live check the instant the
items are shown, so the user is sure to get up to date information. In
rare cases where Limo cannot check the availability information, the
indication May be available is shown.
Next, again depending on the resource type, two or more tabs are
shown.
1. Physical items and audiovisual materials from the local
collections
- Locations: tells users in which
library
or libraries of the KU Leuven or other institutions a copy or copies
of the book/recording/video can be found, whether those items are on
shelf or not and whether they can be requested or not; this tab has
direct links to the relevant information in the extra tool
Find
Library
.
- Details: provides full bibliographic
information on the record in question, including series title, subject
terms and abstract (when available in the source database). In
addition, one or several links may be given on the right hand side:
- to the LibriLinks menu.
- to a form to request the item in
another library (outside of KU Leuven).
- to the LIBISnet Catalogue.
- to the record description in the source database.
- to Google Books (for an electronic version of a book being
viewed).
- Tabs: this tab enables you to add,
delete, and update tags for an item. More info: see Tagging.
- Share: this tab features the
record_id-number in the library catalog, a permalink for easy linking
to the Limo record at hand, a Bookmark or Share link to a plethora of
social bookmarking sites, buttons for easy printing and e-mailing of
the Limo record at hand and an export link to Reference Manager and
EndNote.
When no tabs are shown for a book or audiovisual item, it means
that
there are two or more different versions of the title available in the
library collection. At first Limo groups those multiple related items
(e.g. different editions of a given book, or a book and a film of the
same title) together in the results list.

By clicking the link There are X versions of this
item, you are taken
to the separate records for the individual items, which come with the
tabs as described.
2. Online publications (journal articles or e-books)
For these items, up to four tabs can be shown:
- View online: this tab is only shown
when you are on campus and Limo has determined that the full text of a
given article is available to KU Leuven patrons; it contains the link
or links - one for each access point – that take you as close as
possible to the full text.
- Details: here you can find the
bibliographic details of the article, including
abstract and subject terms (when available in the source database).
In addition one or several links may be given on the
right hand side :
- to the full LibriLinks menu of the article.
- to the Belgian Union Catalogue of Periodicals (to
check whether the journal in question is available in print or
electronic form at another Belgian academic library).
- to the journal’s impact factor in Journal Citation
Reports (if applicable).
- to the full record in Web of Science (if applicable).
- a Find item in the library link is
shown
when Limo knows that
print volumes of the journal concerned are part of the library
collection (useful when the volume you need is not available
electronically).
- a link to an interlibrary loan
request form is only
shown when a given article is unavailable online to KU Leuven patrons.

- Recommendations: here additional
articles can be shown which
might be relevant to the topic covered in the article; these
recommendations are based on searches that were performed by users who
have viewed the same article.

- Tabs: this tab enables you to add,
delete, and update
tags for an item. More info: see Tagging.
- Share: this tab features the
record_id-number in the source database, a permalink for easy linking
to the Limo record at hand, a Bookmark or Share link to a plethora of
social bookmarking sites, buttons for easy printing and e-mailing of
the Limo record at hand and an export link to Reference Manager and
EndNote.
A print book or journal may be available in the library collection, but
it may not be readily accessible, e.g. because it is stored in a closed
access stack room or because another patron has borrowed it. In those
cases you can request a copy via the Locations tab.

Per library that holds a copy of the book or journal you need, you will
find information on its exact location, its shelf number, any
particular conditions, its due date (if it has been borrowed) and
status (e.g. normal loan, exceptional loan, no loan). In the final, Request
Options column there is the button : request.

All relevant data are automatically copied into the request form.
Optionally you can add a comment before submitting the form by clicking
the button Request.
Afterwards you will get a confirmation note:

Once the request has been placed you can check its progress via My
Account, by clicking the Requests tab.

Requesting
a copy from another library
|
Top |
Not every search result that Limo finds is necessarily available in the
printed or digital collection of the university library. A link to an
interlibrary loan (ILL) request form is
included in the Details tab:
- for all physical materials (printed books, journals,..), yes or
no on shelf in one of the LIBISnet libraries,
- for online articles that are not available to KU Leuven
patrons
(Indication No full text available)
This gives KU Leuven patrons the opportunity to request a copy of the
book or article from another (non-KU Leuven) library.

A number of details are automatically entered into the form. Users
are
required to
- check that the right tab is selected (Request a book / Request
a
journal/serial);
- make sure that every required field (marked with an *) is
filled
out;
- specify the delivery method;
- indicate which suppliers should be contacted;
- confirm that they have read and agree to the rules and
restrictions.
You can check the status of your ILL-requests by selecting the
menu-item ILL requests in the My
Account-area of Limo.

The above applies to all items on which bibliographic information
can be retrieved in Limo. When you are aware of a book or article that
is nowhere to be found in Limo, you can place an open ILL-request for
it through the My Account-area of
Limo. The menu item Create ILL Request leads
to the same
request form as when clicking the link Request in another library. The
only difference is that all fields are
empty; you are obliged to provide at least the mandatory information
as indicated (in the fields marked with an *). Of course any additional
information you might have should also be added to help with the
retrieval of the item you’re looking for.
Note: the ILL-service is not free; find
information on ILL tariffs here (in
Dutch only). In all cases patrons are required to make absolutely sure
that no copy of the article or book they are after, is available in the
university library collection. When submitting an open ILL-request
patrons are further advised to take a number of preliminary steps, in
order to facilitate the processing of their request. Guidance on these
matters is provided here
(in Dutch only).
Managing Results
What is tagging ?
Tags are words or phrases that you can assign to items to help you
organize and remember them. You share your tags with the community,
enabling you to see the tags assigned to items by other users. In
addition, tags you assign to items will also be available to the
community. You can assign as many tags to an item as you like.
How do I tag ?
The tags you see are listed in order of popularity, with the most
popular tag at the top of the list. You can see all the tags you are
using, as well as everyone elseʹs tags for this item. When you assign a
tag, keep in mind the following question, ʺWhat tags or words will help
me remember this page a few months from now?ʺ This is a good starting
point for assigning tags. You do not have to rely on the designer of a
system to provide you with an appropriate category. You make up tags as
you need them, and use the tags that make the most sense to you.

When you click on the link Add New Tag
, you can do the
following:
- Assign an existing tag to the current item. Select the box
next
to the tag you want to assign to the item or type the tag name into the
Add or delete tags for this item area.
You can check as many tags as
you want. If you are typing the tag names into the Add
or delete tags for this item
area, type a comma between each tag name.
- Assign a new tag to the current item. Type the name of the
new
tag in the Add or delete tags for this item
area.
NOTE: Tags must not exceed 35 characters and can
contain only letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores, and apostrophes.
- Remove your tag from the current item. Delete the tag in
the Add or delete tags for this item area or
uncheck the tag in the list of
tags.
How Do I Search for a Tag ?
You can search for items with a certain tag in Advanced
Search: Select the search field in user
tags from the dropdownlist.
Note: the items will not be
immediately searchable by user tags; you will find them the following
day after you have
assigned the tag(s).

What Is a Query?
A query is a word or phrase you specify in the search box to look up
information. You can do the following with queries:
- view the current session’s queries and results;
- save a query from the current session in order to use it later.
Saving and viewing queries
If you are signed in, you can save any query by clicking the
“Save this
query” link located at the top the search box.
Each time you refine a set of search results by use of the
available
facets Limo actually performs a new search operation. It is possible to
save a query including any number of facets by clicking the Save
this query including refinements
link.

When you want to save a query a pop-up window appears prompting
you
to provide a name for it. After that you click Save.

All saved queries can be viewed by going to the My Citations
area: by default those saved queries are shown when clicking the My
Queries
tab.

Right above the Saved queries
tab is another one called This
session’s queries
. Limo always keeps track of any and all queries
and refinements you perform during a session. This summary can be
viewed by clicking This session’s queries
. From there you can
rerun any of those searches and permanently save them if you wish. Once
you close down Limo any query not saved permanently is removed from the
system.
Note: at present it is impossible to
set up alerts with saved queries and have Limo run them again at
scheduled times to provide you with updated results. This feature will
be added as part of a future update.
Using My Account
The My Account
area of Limo enables
you to view the contents of your
library card and perform a number of library services. In addition, it
lets you define your personal Limo settings. To access My Account,
click the corresponding link which appears in the top right hand corner
of every Limo page.
By clicking the Personal Settings
option in the menu on the
left hand side of the screen you can view and edit the default e-mail
address of your choice.
Note: Communication via SMS is not activated
for
the moment.
Users that don't login via the Central Login page of the KULeuven
Association (thus users that select "Other users" in the list of
Institutions when they login) have the possibility to change their
password here. After they click on Edit Details,
the button Change
Password will appear.
In addition you have limited options to tailor the Limo user
interface.
Thus, you can set the maximum number of search results per page (10,
20, 30 or 50). Changing the interface language is not available at
present: English is the only option.
Note: to keep your settings for future
sessions, you must sign in and save your preferences.
Renewing
Loans
and Other Library Services
|
Top |
In addition to information about your personal preferences and
settings, My Account allows you to perform a
number of basic library services:
At any given time you are able to see an up to date list of your
active loans, by clicking the Loans
item in the menu on the left.
As long as the due date hasn’t lapsed and the item you have in
your
possession hasn’t been requested by another patron, you are also able
to renew the loan by clicking the link in the final (Action
)
column: when you have loaned several items you can renew them
separately via the indiviual links or you can Renew All
by
clicking the column header.

In addition you can always retrieve a list of historic loans,
which may
help you to retrieve an item you have lost track of.
The Requests link allows you to check
the
progress of any
(stackroom) requests you’ve placed, giving information about
- the type of request you’ve made;
- bibliographic details;
- the status of your request;
- the pickup location & actual location of the requested item.
From this tab you can also submit an open interlibrary loan request.
This should only be used for publications that are unavailable in
either printed or electronic form in the KU Leuven collection and on
which no bibliographic information can be found in Limo.
You can check the status of your ILL-requests by selecting the menu-item ILL requests in the My Account-area of Limo.
Finally the My Account section provides
you
with a list of all Fines & Fees that
have accrued and remain
unpaid, as well as Blocks & Messages.
Extra Tools
At the top of every page in Limo you can find three extra tools
designed to help you with a very specific query.
Using Browse
Databases
|
Top |
Using Simple or Advanced Search you are able to
find,
by title only,
any database included in the digital library collection of the
KU Leuven, be it a free or a licensed resource.
In addition, with any query you run in Limo, you
are
immediately
looking up your search terms in (a section of) the databases
covered by
the Primo Central index. This may get you many hundreds or
thousands of
results. Even so there still remains a considerable number of databases
in the library collection that is not (yet) included in a Limo search
operation and that may yield valuable additional search results.
With
the Browse Databases tool, you can identify
these additional databases of which
the content is not covered by Limo.

Using the Browse Databases tool you can
look up all available databases for a specific field of research and/or
by type:
- Subject: you can specify a subject to
display the list of databases cataloged for that given subject;
featured are the three main research domains – Biomedical Sciences,
Exact Sciences and Humanities – and about thirty disciplines, arranged
in alphabetical order.
- Type: you can identify the required
database(s) by type selecting the appropriate one from the dropdownlist
of twelve types.
It is possible to combine the two filters, so that you can specifically
look up, e.g., bibliographic databases relevant to Computer Science or
Journal Collections in the field of Philosophy or Political Science.
- The filter on Category allows you to
limit your search results as follows:
- All databases: no filter is applied and you get the list of
all databases corresponding to the chosen criteria;
- Databases searchable via Limo: (most of) the items in these
databases can also be found via the Limo search box.
- Databases not searchable via Limo: these databases contain
items you may not find via the Limo search box and so should be
searched in addition to a Limo query, in their native interface.
The databases that meet the chosen search criteria are shown in
alphabetical order, ten per screen.
- To link to any given database’s
website, click the database name.
- To display a short description of a
database, click the corresponding Info-button.
When a database is searchable via Limo, this information is given next
to the type indication.
You can find all journals made available by the library, print and
electronic, via the
Limo search box, but the “Find E-Journal” tool gives you an extra
option to
search for electronic journals only.

The Find E-Journal
tool allows
you
to search for electronic journals by title and by subject (Category);
in addition you can also browse the full list of available e-journals
by clicking any letter of the alphabet.
The Locate
tab helps to see through
which vendor any given journal has been licensed to the KU Leuven.
Finally, Citation Linker
allows you
to quickly verify whether, for a given citation, your institution has
access to the full text of the article.
The Find Library
tool has been
designed to give practical information
about all physical libraries where physical items of books and journals
can be found, as well as audiovisual and other materials. The details
given include the address, phone & fax number, e-mail address and
opening hours. The list of libraries is not limited to those of the
KU Leuven, but includes all members of the LIBISnet network and their
respective branches.

The tool is available at the top of every Limo page. In addition a
direct link to the information about any given library is always
included in the Locations tab for any
physical item in the results list.
